The club was well-represented at the Prologue (start) of the
Tour of Britain on a warm, sunny Sunday in early September.
6 members of the Developers section took part in a
skills demo on the finishing straight, prior to the start of the Prologue
:- Grant, Kieran, Lewis, Georgie, Ruth and
William.
5 Go-Ride teams from the South-East practiced their
skills in a fenced-off area of the park, not far from the Finish line. Then, at
11:30, they all walked over to the Finish straight with bikes supplied by
British Cycling.
By this time, there were a few more spectators present to
witness the
children demonstrating the skills they have learned over the
last few years. Parents and Go-Ride Bexley coaches were also present for the
occasion. With the advertising boards being rattled and banged in encouragement
for the riders, the contestants put on an exciting competition on the final 50
metres of the circuit, which was used by the professional racers later.
For the record, Go-Ride Bexley came fourth, with Team Darenth
putting on an excellent display to win with a flourish. There was plenty of
sporting applause and medals all round at the completion of the mini
competition, in true Go-Ride spirit !
Earlier in the morning, the club was represented in one of the
support races for the Tour of Britain. Joe Simmons and Liam McLaughlin entered
for the London Youth GP, their first attempt at road-circuit racing. They were
up against a very strong field and had to complete 4 laps of the full 2.5km
circuit. Both Racers Plus riders finished just outside the top 10, but gained a
lot from the experience.
