Go-ride Bexley is a new cycling club for the under-16s set up in partnership
between Bexley Council and the Borough’s two cycling clubs - the Gemini BC and
the Woolwich CC. We run programmes of coaching activities at Danson Park
(Lakeside Close entrance) and other off road venues around the Borough every
Saturday between 10 and 12 o’clock
What is Go-ride?
Go-ride is a programme of cycling activities developed by British Cycling, the
national governing body for cycling, to teach young people cycling skills and
introduce them to the range of cycling disciplines such as mountain biking,
BMX, road and track riding.
Full details are available on British Cycling’s
web-site but basically it’s about having fun on a bike, learning to
ride with confidence, and trying mini versions of the sport - all delivered in
a safe off road environment by trained British Cycling coaches.
The activities can be adapted to make them harder or easier so it is suitable
both for beginners and good cyclists. Riders are divided into ability groups
and follow structured coaching programmes. Initially the focus is on building
the basic skills needed to ride safely: stopping and starting; riding with one
hand; riding slowly and maintaining balance; using gears etc. When they have
mastered these techniques riders progress to more challenging activities
including off road rides and competitions with other local clubs.
All riders have their own coaching records and take skills tests to assess their
progress against the national awards scheme. These results can be entered on
the national web-site so that riders can compare their times with others from
all over the Country. Some might even find themselves eligible for the Talent
Team tests – British Cycling’s scheme to identify future Olympic and world
champions!
Who can join?
All children in years 3 to 9 are welcome (ages 7 - 16). The only requirements
